CHARACTER NAME: Jane Crocker
SERIES: Homestuck
CHRONOLOGY: Right after getting stabbed by the Red Miles, and dying
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
Before we get to the meat and potatoes of Jane’s actual backstory, let’s take a look at the workings of the world in which she resides. The world she grows up in is remarkably similar to the real Earth—aside from the many terrifying flora and fauna found on Jake’s island, and the odd bits and pieces of technology—Sylladex’s, transmaterializers, games that affect the very fabric of the universe, ect--that that are far beyond that of the real world.
Probably one of the most important aspects of her universe is the game Sburb. It is, essentially, a sims-esque game, only instead of being able to alter the surroundings of a simulated person, Sburb actually affects the real world. It’s literally a reality-bending game that sets in motion the end of the world via-comets. ( Though it can also be seen as the world having been doomed to this fate from the very beginning, as one of the many machinations of the game. )
Each Sburb session leaves players in two roles as far as the operation of the actual game goes—there is a server and a client player. The server player is able to manipulate the environment of the client player, and is supposed to deploy important technology so that the client player is able to get into the game. Every person acts as both a server and client player at some point, in order to complete a loop so that every player in the session is able to enter the game.
The players are also assigned a class and aspect, which is a part of their official title, and is an indication as to what their powers are. As an example, Jane herself is the Maid of Life. Jade’s aspect is life, which gives her precedence over things involving life. It’s not known what the Maid does exactly, but based on what happens in canon it can be assumed that the Maid class is literally made of their aspect. Of all the aspects, two are required to be able to win the game—a player of space, and a player of time. Jane’s session has neither of these, though with the Beta sessions players entering the alpha session, they’ll have a space and a time player on their side, and the chance to win the game.
In addition to having a class and an aspect, players also have their own planets. Their planet is where they go once they first enter the medium—the medium being a part of the universe that sburb teleports everyone to. Shit’s weird—and it serves as the very beginning of their adventure. Each world has its own obstacles, challenges, creatures that inhabit it—these creatures are known as consorts. Consorts are essentially the NPC’s of the land, and serve no direct purpose other than the relaying of myths and such. NPC-in’ it up, bro. In addition to the Consorts, each world also has a denizen that presides over it. Not all that much is known about the greater purpose each denizen serves, though one way they can be seen is as a final boss of sorts.
Another thing each player has is a dream self. A dream self is basically a projection of the person within the game, one that the player can awaken as when their real self goes to sleep. Each dream self either lives on the moons of Prospit or Derse—the planets that circle Skaia—and they are able to act as a ‘second life’ of a sort. However, that does not meant that if a character dies they simply become their dream self. No! If a character is left alone after they die, their dream self will die as well. So, in order for this second life to kick in, one of two things needs to happen. A character must be kissed by another player, or die on their quest bed. What’s a quest bed? A quest bed is, well, a bed. It’s not just any ordinary bed, though, oh no. A quest bed allows for a character to ascend to god tier—a state which not only supplies them with awesome PJ’s, but effectively makes them immortal as well (with a few provisios). Each player has two quest beds. One is on their planet, and one is on either Prospit or Derse.
Also it should be noted that all the main characters (Jane, Jake, Dirk, Roxy, John, ect) weren’t created through normal means. They were, in fact, created ectobiologically, and then sent on metors through time and space. This was to ensure that each and every one of them would actually come into existence. Though really, it’s just more weird, time shenanigans.
At the chronological beginnings of what is relevant to the story told in homestuck, there was Beforus. A planet of trolls that played their game only to find out they couldn’t win. In order to give themselves a chance they decide to initiate the scratch. A scratch is basically a reset, one that wipes the existing session from existence before rebooting it to one with more favorable circumstances, ones which would hopefully allow for a group of players to succeed. So, the players from Beforus set the scratch in motion. However, before they were erased from existence, or could escape their session like the Beta kids of the future did theirs, one of the trolls blows everyone up.
Fast forward a while to Alternia, the post-scratch world of trolls. These trolls were much more vicious than those that came before them, and they were raised in a much harsher environment. They too, played their game, and winning was nearly in their grasp! However, a horrible, malicious murderer known as Bec Noir enters their session, destroys everything, and figuratively rips the ultimate prize from their fingers. The only thing these trolls can do is hide out on a meteor in the middle of nowhere.
When Karkat, one of the trolls, discovers the humans—the species that thrives in the universe he and his companions created—and comes to realize that gasp! They’re the reason Bec Noir entered his friend’s session, and caused everything bad to happen. So he does what any self-respecting troll would do and trolls the fuck out of one of them. Starting many in a series of chronologically fucked up conversations. All that’s really important to know, however, is that he and his troll companions meddle in the affairs of the four human players, essentially bringing about their current situation. Whoops?
Now, let’s shift our attention to the four players the trolls are bothering—John, Rose, Dave, and Jade. They, too, start their session, and it all seems pretty cool! They run into some hitches in trying to actually get into the game, but for the most part, things go according to plan. That is, until Rose realizes their game is doomed to fail. Thus starts a quest to find a way to fix things. There are time shenanigans, and regular shenanigans, and many, many dead Daves. Through these shenanigans they find out that not only is Mr Noir a problem, but their session is seriously fucked! It has Cancer! Well, in a manner of speaking. There is a tumor in the center of Skaia, and the session itself is impossible to win. So, like the Trolls at the beginning of this tale, they decide to scratch their session and escape into the session that would be created from it.
Now, onto the important part! We are introduced to the new kids and their new universe. However their session is a peculiar one in that it’s a null session. In fact, their Skaia was destroyed before they even got into the game. This means that they don’t really have much a chance to win, either. Not without the help of the kids that are slowly but surely making their way into their universe, anyway!
Now, let’s talk about Jane.
This young lasses story begins once John and company scratch their session and basically re-boot the universe. In John’s universe, she was his Nanna, but now it’s her time to shine in the spotlight as youngBarnstench Fartface Jane Crocker! Jane grew up in a small suburb in the United States with her father. Jane is the heiress of Crockercorp, and is very pleased by this as she’s a big—if not the company’s biggest—fan. Because of her status as heiress to this rather prestigious and world-renowned company, Jane has been having trouble by way of assassination attempts, which have led to her being grounded (and her continual antics in an attempt to get out of her home result in her being grounded even further.)
Not everything is what it seems on the surface of Crockercorp, however. No, it’s actually run by a sinister troll queen, who traveled millions of years through the universe until she reached Jane’s planet and is now slowly working to dominate the world—starting first with Crockercorp and everything it’s managed to sink it’s gnarled teeth into!
Now, over the course of her 15 years, she became good friends with her BFF 4EVERZ Roxy, The derp with whom she has a crush Jake, and the cool, shades wearing kid Dirk. She also has become acquainted with uu and UU, two aliens that seem to know a lot about her and her friends up and coming adventure--An up and coming adventure she’s really, really excited about, I might add.
So excited, she’s anticipating her copy of SBURB with much gusto. She tries to occupy her time by chatting with friends, reading, and going through her stuff, but really all she wants to do is march right outside and take a gander at what’s in the mailbox. Regrettably, she does do this—and nearly gets blown up in the process. It’s only thanks to GCat that she’s actually safe and sound.
She wakes up on Prospit—though with the dream she tells Jake, it seems her first awakening on Prospit was a short while before this—and fondly regards the clouds…only to get stabbed by Jack Noir. That cheating fiend.
Anywho, she wakes back up in her yard, gets grounded, and goes to start up SBURB. Whoo yeah, getting her adventure underway. Excelle—Except the copy Roxy sent her isn’t a legit copy of the game, and is in fact an attempt to get her to not play SBURB at all. So instead of starting up the game like planned, her computer gets blown up instead. Whoops?
All hope is not lost, however, and once she’s saved once again by GCat, she learns that Dirk is going to be her server player (and is installing the game on a different computer in her house at that moment. Can I get a boo-ya?). Before she does anything else, though, she ends up getting pestered by Jake! Yeah! Time to tell him how she feels!
Wait.
No, it doesn’t go as planned, and she ends up hurdling herself into the friendzone at the speed of sound—and tells him to go romance another man in the process. Man, this has NOT been her day. But the show must go on. So, once all that is said and done, she finally gets her session underway and she disappears into the medium, house and all.
She then travels her planet—The land of Helium and Crypts—and with the help of Lil’ Seb, robotic bunny given to her by her friend Dirk, she solves puzzles and hopes to catch a glimpse of her missing father. She finds a lead near a mysterious transporter--and even though Dirks auto-responder tells her to stay put--she hops on it anyway, and gets sent to Derse. Which is currently...being destroyed by the Red Miles, a deadly attack that one simply cannot escape. Before she can do much of anything, though, she gets stabbed through the middle by the miles, and dies.
This is where I will be taking her from..
PERSONALITY:
One of Jane’s most prominent personality traits is her skepticism. She’s skeptical to a fault, to the point it puts a strain on her relationship with her best friend, Roxy. She finds ridiculous claims or hard to believe situations so far-fetched that she needs proof to believe them. The only person she actually seems to give the benefit of the doubt is UU, for some mysterious reason. Based on one of their conversations, it seems Jane didn’t believe her in the past, either, but UU managed to provide proof to her claims in some way. Jane loves all things detective, so really it’s no wonder she puts so much stock in hard evidence. In most other cases, however, she's overly critical of others, and can be very judgmental all things considered. She does try to not be so much of a tightass in this sense, but she has a really hard time taking things at face value.
On the topic of detectives, Jane is a young detective in the making! Sure, she is the heiress to a major corporation, and she’s excited to inherit said company. However, she does love a good mystery, and she’s pretty darn good at solving them. Her journey through her planet is a great indication of this, as it put her up against many a puzzle. All of which she was able to solve in a timely manner. Another of Jane's interests is her love of vaudeville humor, pranks, and funny guys. She likes to think of herself as a quality prankster, though she acknowledges her friends' pranking prowess as well, and wonders if her taste in jokes and the like is too tame or old-fashioned. She gets her love of pranking, and her particular brand of humor from her Grandfather. She never met him, but she fell in love with his funny business through old films of him on the stage.
Jane has a very peculiar way of speaking. She writes with perfect grammar and punctuation. In addition to this, she is very polite with how she says things, even when she's being critical of others. She's the type to avoid swearing, and in all of her appearances, she is only seen swearing a few times--usually when she's frustrated beyond belief. In every other case, she comes up with some very creative alternatives to swears. Such as 'goddarnit' and 'shucks'. She also has a tendency to speak with very dated language. This is by no means an all the time thing. She doesn't talk like she's from the 1700's all the time. But she will slip words in that are from a time before her own, peppering her speech in a way that makes her seem as proper and polite as her grammar.
Don't let her proper speaking manner fool you, though. Jane can be very, very silly at times. A great example of this is her donning a very shitty disguise to try and sneak out of the house. She's also very excitable! And when she gets excited or worked up she tends to have an awkward time expressing herself, talking about the little flag on a mailbox in a way that thoroughly confuses Roxy. Something that goes hand in hand with this is when she gets flustered by something. She goes into panic mode, which leads to her being unable to express herself--much like when she gets excited, only this is ten times worse. She will deny her feelings, say things that are opposite of what she means, and just make a mess of things in general. She does this when Jake asks her if she has feelings for him. Really, it was a disaster, and just goes to show that she does not operate well under flustering circumstances.
When Jane gets upset, or angry (with herself or others) she can become very Passive Aggressive and snippy. She's not one to actually chew someone out, and she will try to stave off the angry feelings she has. But it still show through in her attitude. Where she is normally very amicable, she will suddenly be short with whoever she's speaking with. An example is her conversation with Dirk's auto-responder after the whole feelings mishap with Jake. She is very, very frustrated, and as a result she becomes short with the auto-responder.
She also has an avid curiosity, which leads her to being somewhat reckless. She'll head right into danger, without heeding the warnings of others. Such as when she goes to the mailbox despite the attempts on her life, and goes to follow her dad when Dirks auto-responder tells her to stay put--which leads to her getting stabbed. She just has a terrible sense of self preservation, which is ironic considering she's the maid of life.
Jane is the leader of her session, though she doesn't actually see herself as a leader. This doesn't mean that she is not a good leader, however, because she had very excellent leadership qualities! She's selfless, and would put the group before herself, and wants to see the group succeed--not like someone who wants to just be a leader and that's that. She actually has her groups best interest at heart, and wants to succeed with them instead of just lead them to victory.
Jane is a very dedicated daughter, to the point that she goes out and searches for her father despite being told not to. Having worked through the rough spots in her relationship with her father, Jane has a really good relationship with him. That doesn't mean she listens to everything he says, of course, but it still stands that she loves her dad very much, and would do anything to make sure he was okay.
POWER:
REGENERATION: Given that her canon abilities have her essentially made of life, allowing her to bring herself back from the dead--she will have a similar power in game. However! Unlike her actual abilities, she won't be able to raise herself from the dead, because that just wouldn't be fair. Instead, she'll just be able to heal from injuries a lot faster than most other characters. Wounds that might take months, would heal in days or hours, and minor cuts and scrapes would heal in minutes.
CLUE-FINDER: This is basically an out of body experience that lets her see things from other perspectives! What better tool could their be, for a young detective.
UTENSILS OF DOOM: Forks, spoons, and other baking equipment can be used as legitimate weapons in her hands, and they can be used to actually pack a punch, so to speak.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
Aww shucks,
[ She would ask something along the lines of 'Why can't I seem to connect to pesterchum, and where are my friends?' but what a silly question that would be. Instead, she settles on the more general. After all, her first order of business is figuring out where she is! ]
this wasn't what I was expecting at all!
In fact, it hardly seems like any kind of afterlife I've ever heard of.
I'm not exactly sure whether or not that's a good thing, though I'm sure it shall reveal itself to be one or the other in time!
In the meantime, I suppose I should be content with the fact that i'm here and in one piece!
...Still, this certainly is one peculiar predicament.
[ 'Peculiar predicament' is the understatement of the century, but still. ]
Hoo boy, if anything, this certainly requires some serious sleuthing.
So! If you'll give me a moment here to see if I can find a fedora, I’ll get this case underway.
The case being, of course, an attempt to figure out just where this city is!
I mean you'll have to forgive me, but it doesn't exactly look like something from within the game.
It all looks quite modern, actually...
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
You’re a hot-shot, a real tough snooper. You could catch all the CONS and MOBS and other assorted THUGS. You’d even sock ‘em right in the jaw, like a real hardboiled detective. And at the end of the day, you’d be known as the gal that can make any bad guy SING.
You like to think it would be your rather fetching FAKE MOUSTACHE that really does the trick. It’s intimidating as all get-go, and you’ve been perfecting your MOUSTACHE TWIRL for weeks. It’s a real knock-ou—
Wait this is stupid, why are you doing this nonsense. A gal like you is much better off being described in the THIRD PERSON.
There we go, much better. Not that Jane wouldn’t imagine herself as the greatest Sleuth ever to snoop out a goon. After all, she may be a fine gal, but she’s no daisy, if her current state of affairs is any indication. She’s got the fedora on and everything, so clearly she means business.
Currently, that business is figuring out where a pick-pocketing creep has gone. She had been referred to as a hero upon her arrival in this version of Earth, and while the title was a bit flashy for her tastes, it was the perfect opportunity to test out her sleuthing skills. So when an old woman started yelling for help, because someone had grabbed her purse, Jane assures the woman that she is now on the case, and that her purse would be found in no time at all!
And find it is exactly what she does.
She wants to pretend it’s a much more arduous task than it is, that it was a bigger mystery than it actually turns out to be. It’s much more fun that way, she thinks. And so as she follows the rather obvious purse-snatcher—He was, after all, causing quite the commotion in his escape. It would be hard not to know where he was—she acts as though she doesn’t, meticulously searching for clues and briefly questioning witnesses before hurrying on her way. She makes sure to not lose sight of him, of course, and she doesn’t make her move until he runs into a dead end alley. (She also makes sure all the facts point in the alley’s direction. It would be breaking the detective’s code otherwise. Not that there’s actually a detective’s code, she just made that up.)
She was all prepared to confront the thief, though when she actually came face to face with him, she realizes that she is severely out-matched. She was not about to give up, however. She’d survived numerous assassination attempts, for Pete’s sake!
So she quickly spots the purse, hanging loosely from his fingers, and with a cleverly timed youth roll, she snatches it from his grasp and makes a run for it. He chases after her for a time, but Jane manages to out-maneuver him, disappearing into the crowd.
She returns the purse to its rightful owner, and heads on her way happily. She could just imagine what her father would think, if he knew what she’d just done—He would tell her how proud he was…right before grounding her.
And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

POWER:
CLUE-FINDER: This is basically an out of body experience that lets her see things from other perspectives! What better tool could their be, for a young detective.
UTENSILS OF DOOM: Forks, spoons, and other baking equipment can be used as legitimate weapons in her hands, and they can be used to actually pack a punch, so to speak.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
